The
John Shows Family
Association
Newsletter

Volume No. 11
Date April 30, 2004
The John Shows Family
Association Will Meet on August 14, 2004
The annual meeting of the association will start at 10:30AM on the 14th of
August 2004 at the Moselle Community Center. The John Shows Family Association
has the objectives of perpetuating the memory of John Shows, note achievements
of the Shows Family, and to encourage genealogical, historical and biographical
research. In recent years the annual meeting has been held in Moselle the second
Saturday of August. A small map is included on this newsletter, so mark your
calendars. All descendants and interested persons are encouraged to attend. As
with past meetings, we will exchange information, tell family stories and have
the opportunity to meet some new cousins. Memorabilia and pictures are always
welcomed and will have some copying and scanning equipment available this year
that should make sharing much easier. These activities will be followed by our
traditional potluck dinner, so family groups are encouraged to bring a covered
dish. We would like to have as many attend this year as possible in order to
have a quorum to discuss the future of the association.
The 2002 and 2003 Meetings
The August 10, 2002 meeting was well attended and there was an exchange of a
great deal of information. Pete Shows Baucum came and made available her
outstanding book Cornelius Holmes Shows of Jones County, Mississippi. If you
have any interest in the Shows family this book is a must. The following day
Pete also escorted a few courageous cousins to the John Shows home site and
graveyard. The August 9, 2003 meeting saw a decline in attendance, and it was
decided to ask everyone to make an extra effort to attend the 2004 meeting. Both
meetings were presided over by Pat Shows, and he remains the association
President. Pat and his wife Sam authored many of the prior newsletters, and
he has served the Association of many years. Both Pat and Sam deserve a
great deal of thanks for their work.
The Newsletter
***********************************
Since the first newsletter in 1991 there have been great improvements in
computers and printing that make newsletters much easier. It has been an
interesting experience to get this newsletter out to the association. We found
that the address list has not been updated in a few years, and it was stored on
a workable but a badly outdated program from the 1980s. Updating the software
was easy, but updating the addresses will depend on the readers. We expect many
wrong addresses, and request that everyone pass this newsletter along to others
that might be interested.
Updated Addresses and E-Mail Addresses are Requested
If you would like to continue receiving this annual newsletter, please send us
an E-mail message or post card to confirm
And/or update your information. We would also like to send as many E-mail
newsletters as possible, since this would speed the mailing process and save the
mailing cost. If we already have and E-mail address you will receive both. This
has been done to get the newsletter to as many as possible. Your names and
addresses will not be given out or used for anything other than this newsletter.
Family News

Everyone should know about the John Shows Family association web site that our
cousin Tresa Tatyrek has been kind enough to establish and maintain for the
family: http://home.comcast.net/~magnoliamanor-genealogy/jsa/JohnShowsFamily.htm
This site has links to a huge amount of information and has been expertly
maintained. The prior Newsletters and photographs of John Shows markers can be
found at this site. There are also links to family genealogy that would allow
almost any cousin to connect to their ancestry.
Summer 2004, Corinth, Mississippi will open a $9.5 million, 12,000 square foot
Civil War Interpretive Center. This 24-acre site will display the “Siege and
Battle of Corinth”. As many of you know, several of our Shows ancestors
participated in this and nearby battles. It is more than stirring to hear what
these people experienced, and how our family was touched by the war.
One family very much involved in Corinth and nearby battles was that of
Cornelius Holmes Shows Sr. who had four of his sons in the 37th Mississippi
Infantry. This unit participated in the battle of Iuka on 19 September 1862 and
on 3, 4 October 1862 at Corinth, and records show that these brothers were
there. The youngest of the four, Daniel J. was wounded and captured by Union
forces at the Battle of Iuka. Like most of the seriously wounded Confederates,
the retreating Army likely left Daniel in Iuka in the predawn hours of 20
September 1862. Leaving their seriously wounded brother must have been a
dreadful experience. Federal records reveal that Daniel was later moved to
Corinth and eventually died there as a wounded POW on October 10th, 1862. He
very likely witnessed the battle of Corinth from the prospective of a POW. To
add mystery to the story, the three remaining brothers were reported as captured
in Corinth by Union forces on October 4th, 1862. This is interesting since their
Regiment, the 37th Mississippi Infantry was reported to have withdrawn from the
battle with minimal loses. One cannot help but wonder if their capture was not
part of a search for their missing brother.
It appears there is more to the story of Corinth than we know, and exploring the
new center in Corinth should be well worth a visit.
