My mother-in-law says Mary Raby was her mother's favorite grandmother.  She loved to read and encouraged others to do so.

As I have researched the Raby family I have found some interesting tidbits that none of the current generations knew about.  Mary Raby was married three times.  The first and last ended in divorce (the first in the early 1880's sounded like a real scandal for the time period).   Obtaining her death certificate was tough.  I didn't know about the third marriage.  She is buried beside her second husband Jacob Sellars.

Finding her parents proved to be easy as there were succession records (probate) in Point Coupee Parish, LA where she was born.  They listed her and her siblings with both their first and middle names.  The name Cader as a middle name was used and lead me to look at a Cader Raby I had found on marriage and census records.  A trip to another court house produced his succession record with all of his children's names and the name of his wife.  As a genealogist I feel blessed to have gotten the succession records, but it is unfortunate that my blessing left some fatherless children.
