Recently several people have logged onto ENS N. T. Shows wartime
journal of happenings aboard USS PCE(R)852 during WWII. I was the
Executive Officer during the period of his journal. During the 90
days we were at Okinawa, the navy lost over 5,000 killed and several
thousand more wounded.
Many of these passed over the decks of the USS PCE(R)852, a
combat/rescue ship. The C.O., LT Henry J. Irwin, USNR received the
Navy Cross and the entire crew received the Navy Commendation. I am
glad the journal is available to record part of our wartime history.
I recently met Newsom T. Shows, III at a ship reunion and we
discussed his father, ENS Newsom T. Shows, Jr. who was the
Engineering Officer aboard the USS PCE(R)852, and who died in 1951
in an auto accident.

Am working on a project for my mother's side which goes back to
Ludwig Botner in the late 1600's in Germany. He was the first to
cross the pond around 1718 in her family line. My mothers people
lived primarily in Maryland, PA, and VA. However, I started roaming
around my fathers side and was pleasantly surprised to see that so
much is documented. Thanks for all the work. My father, Dewey Lester
Ward, born 29 October 1919 is living in Yuma, Arizona. His father
was Eulus C. Ward (often called EC in the famly) and he died in 1981
in Laurel, MS. My father had two children with my mother (Elva
Devona Mullenix, Hagerstown, Maryland, b 1924) and several other
children with other wives. Let me know if I can help. Yvonne Taylor

My line is as follows starting with my daughter : Mary Helen
Simmons Mc Dow; Sue Ann Smock Simmons; Sivolah Bass Smock; Daisey
Dean Laughlin Bass; Sarah Almedia Williams Laughlin. I have been
trying for 4 or 5 months to get past Sarah, however, I have been
experiencing an extremely difficult time finding documentation
concerning Sarah. I was also told that Sarah's mother was Jamina
Massey Williams and that Lewis C. Williams was married to Jamina in
Tenn. I am unable to obtain the needed
documents to support this, nor find the correct locations where they
lived. I have been able to document my other family lines without
too many problems. If you could help me I will be very grateful.
I can understand your working horizontally. I am being treated for
the second time for cancer at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston,
Texas. I am being told that our medical history is recognized at
M.D.Anderson as that of another family. This is what started my
search. To my great surprise, the one person in the family I would
never have thought to question about her family, never told her
children about their grandmother's name. The last living sibling is
pushing 90 years old and said she and her sisters quit asking
becouse their mother would start crying. The one thing that would
have told my aunt and her sisters about Granny's mom was a Bible.
That Bible disappeared the day of my grandparents' funeral. They
were both killed in a car accident. I think you see why I am
struggling with this particular matter.
I will start radiation treatment on Nov.21. I am hoping to have all
the pieces of the puzzle together by then.
Thank You,
Sue Ann

I note a posting from Tammy Melton Baptiste, in MS.
On a tangent from the name Baptiste, Louisa Baptiste was married to
a Baptiste, who died probably during the period 1860-1875. She then
married John Wesley Ferrill, in Escatawpa (Jackson County) MS in
1876. Their remains are buried in Ferrill Cemetery, Escatawpa.
Louisa and John Ferrill raised a son of Mr. Baptiste. Louisa
Baptiste-Ferrill died in 1937. Six children were born to John and
Louisa. Pat Creel is the RootsWeb coordinator for Jackson County
(2006) and is my distant cousin...I recall that Louisa was born and
grew up in Mobile County AL.

the bug, for sure.
Are you related to the Mecoms?
I am retired, at present, from the our local school district
(secretary to assistant superintendent) and trying to get things in
order around the house before this hurricane season begins. I live
in Port Arthur and we did have some damage but were very blessed.
I hope to hear from you soon.

a lot of help from family members. Still am running into brick walls
but will keep going.
