Name: Trey Mecom <phone_bandit@yahoo.com>
Date: 2001-12-30
Comments:
I think you have a great site. I descend from William H. Mecom, born in Catahoula Parish in 1837 and whose mother's maiden name was Hawthorn, but she died shortly after his birth, and the father Hardy Mecom (whose father was James Mecom (177?)-1814)and mother Patience Harris(177?-1848) - Patience later remarried and had a son Jesse Ward), married Mary Roark in 1838. Four of James/Patience Mecom offspring married 4 of William/Elizabeth Hawthorn offspring. Hardy's brother William married Bridget H. and sister Martha Mecom married Albert H. and sister Nancy Mecom married Wm.Haw. Jr. So there were a lot of double first cousins in the next generation. The Mecom's lived on Bushley Creek as did the Hawthorn's. This information can be verified in an act of partition dated 2/6/1849 in Catahoula Parish land files where the above parties divide the estate of Patience Ward. I've never found the first name of Hardy Mecom's first wife, the Hawthorn girl who is my ancestor, mother of William H. Mecom, who stayed in La., and died in 1902 in Caldwell Parish, near Columbia, La.

Who is your oldest documented ancestor? Hodges Council II born before 1668
Comments:
I am really glad to have found your website and think you have done an impressive amount of work. My branch connection to the Council tree as it appears on your website is as follows: My gggrandfather Rufus Council was a son of Joseph Wright COUNCIL and Elizabeth REDD. Joseph W. was a son of Dudley COUNCIL, who was a son of Nathan, etc., etc. There has been a COUNCIL family reunion in Herrin, IL. held on the last Sunday in June since 1950; the "last Sunday" having been chosen so as to fall the closest to my ggrandfather Thomas Jefferson COUNCIL's birthday (June 25, 1872).

You may be interested to know that there is a publication titled "A Genealogy of the Council Family in America" by Emmett E. Cockrum, published Carbondale, IL., 1985 (86 pages plus index; I have a bound copy). In the credits, he lists earlier works by Kinchin Bascom COUNCIL of Bladen Co., NC around 1900; and Judson COUNCILL of Clifton, VA. who published "Hodges COUNCILL of Virginia and Descendants" in Baltimore, 1941.

Would you be interested in exchanging data by GEDCOM files? I do not have nearly the data that you have collected, but could contribute beginning with Rufus. I would really enjoy hearing from you.

Who is your oldest documented ancestor? John Brown of Surry Co. NC
Comments:
Have you found anything more on your Mathew Brown? I ask because my Felts ancestor married Daniel Brown in NC and stopped in Wayne Co. IN in DEC 1829 to have a child on the way moving to MI. I suspect that they had relatives that they wintered with in IN, but I don't know who the relatives could be. Maybe the parents of Mathew? People moved with each other - so maybe since Mathew's wife was from NC, their families may have known each other back in NC, with the Browns moving to IN before the Smiths. It could also be possible that Mathew's father was a brother of my Daniel. I have found that at least two of Daniel's siblings married into the Messick family of Surry Co. NC. I have not been able to track down all of Daniel's brothers.

Comments:
After looking at your Mathis page, I wanted to add this information. The daughter of the OTHER Aaron Felts I wrote of in the guestbook entry married Ancel Mathis - a relative of these Mathis's. OUR Aaron Felts witnessed a deed between a John and Step (Stephen) Matthews in Wilkes Co. NC. I was wondering if John and Step could really have been Mathis family (Matthews just a misspelling in land records). It is also interesting that people that knew the OTHER Aaron Felts also knew a Step (Stephen) Mathis - a RW soldier of NC.

Comments:
What a nice website. Maybe I can fill you in on additional information about Aaron Felts and descendants. The more I research the Felts the more I am convinced that there are MANY more relatives that we haven't connected to Aaron yet - such as another Aaron Felts that was in the RW from NC. I found documentation of the other Aaron, but think he could have been a nephew of OUR Aaron.

it looks like you have done a super job of documenting the Melton/Richardson line. I learned aalot reading your pages tonight. thanks!
I noticed one error--Mary Jane Melton, daughter of William Dority Melton, was my great gramma. She died, not in 1922,
but July 13, 1944, in Craig, Colorado.
Maxine Updike one of her grandaughters, tells the story that Mary Jane got to see Abraham Lincoln when she was a little child.
She recalls that the family did not think much of him, as he had just freed their slaves and turned their lives upside down.

I was married to Wilford Theodore Donaldson in 1944. We had three children. W.T. (Raby) loved to hunt and loved to read and teach the bible. As he grew older he looked very similar to grandpa N.T. Shows. He died at the age of 73 of Parkinsons on Dec. 3, 1995. I have since remarried to Roy Goodall but was married to Raby for 53 years.
